Finnish researchers from the University of Turku conducted a study to try to understand the neural mechanisms involved in fear responses. As such, and thanks to a panel of “guinea pigs”, the research group was able to draw up the list of the 10 scariest horror films according to science.
Released on January 8, a study published by a group of Finnish researchers who tried to understand the different neural mechanisms that come into play when you feel a sense of fear.
To do so, the group of researchers requested 37 courageous volunteers. Their mission? Watch a plethora of movies selected from the best 100 horror rated films in the past 100 years.
A viewing consisted of exceedingly cramped conditions, so forget the plush sofa or the armchair with soft armrests, each volunteer watched the films in a cramped environment… in an MRI machine.
A set up necessary to visualize the effects these films had on the brains of these brave guinea pigs.
“Therefore, our brains are continuously anticipating and preparing us for action in response to threat, and horror movies exploit this expertly to enhance our excitement,” clarified Researcher Matthew Hudson.
With regard to scientific inquiry, leaps of fear, shouts and documented opinions, here is the list of the 10 horror films deemed the most frightening, without prioritization, according to science:
