Experts explained the reason for the appearance of the steel monolith in the Utah desert, which was believed to come directly from alien lifeforms, however, according to reports, the rationale for it being there is not that intense.

The metal column recently spotted on Nov. 18 in a desert in Utah, in the western United States, is a work of minimalist artist John McCracken, who died in 2011, The Daily Mail reported.

John McCracken is known for his minimalist painting, as well as for his sculptures in the shape of pyramids, obelisks, cubes and slabs. He resided in New Mexico, a neighboring state to Utah.

All his works are exhibited in galleries, this is the first “street” installation attributed to this artist. Some have speculated that the Utah object was not created by McCracken but by an imitator. But art experts have confirmed the work’s authenticity, according to the newspaper.

After an analysis of satellite maps, Internet users came to the conclusion that the monolith appeared in the desert in 2015. Its exact location is being kept secret so as not to attract crowds.

The almost 10 foot tall metal monolith was discovered on Nov. 18 by a team of biologists from the Utah Department of Public Safety, who were flying over a desert area in a helicopter counting bighorn sheep.

The experts stopped over not far from this place to take a photo of the shiny column placed in the ground of a cove of red rocks.

The released photos and a video of the monolith caused Internet users to go wild with theories. Some inferred that it was an installation by extraterrestrials, while others believed that the monolith had been put in by fans of the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on a screenplay co-written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.
