A classic from one of the greatest horror writers, Stephen King will once again be adapted and this week the director of the ‘Firestarter’ reboot has finally been announced.
In 1980, the writer let us know about a story that he has worked on which was certain to become a classic. It mesmerized audiences and excited kids who would love to have great power. The title of that that great book was ‘Firestarter’, which told about a girl who has pyrokinesis abilities (causing fires with the mind) and who along with her father must flee from a secret organization called The Shop.
That story was taken to the big screen in 1984, under the direction of Mark L. Lester and with the performances of Martin Sheen, David Keith, Heather Locklear, George C. Scott and Drew Barrymore as the protagonist of the film.
However, after it received bad reviews from experts, the writer wants to relive his novel in a new cinematic version. Although things have not been easy, since it has been almost 10 years since King announced his idea for a reboot.
One of the obstacles that this project has had is to find a suitable director, in 2017 after a long search Akiva Goldsman was chosen, however, shortly after he renounced from production.
So the filmmaker Fatih Akin was hired, who carried on his shoulders the development of the film until 2019, as he also resigned from the project.
Now, Variety has reported that Universal Pictures is in charge of producing this restart and they have chosen Keith Thomas as the director of ‘Firestarter.’ This director has very few films under his belt, but he has stood out for the short film ‘Arkane’ and for his most recent work ‘Virgil’.
As if that were not enough, it has been revealed that Barrymore will be involved in this new version, but as a producer, while the script will be written by Scott Teems.
A release date for ‘Firestarter’ is not yet known.
