A group of small sharks devoured a dead swordfish 450 meters below the surface. But at the same time, one of the predators was itself swallowed by another larger creature.
A dozen small sharks devouring a swordfish carcass: a rare sight that was captured by a remote-controlled robot that roamed the seabed. The video was released by the National Oceanic an Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The Deep Discoverer craft was 450 meters deep off the coast of South Carolina when it sighted a group of sharks on the seabed. The aircraft caught 11 sharks devouring a dead swordfish approximately 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) long.
Next, the observers saw onscreen a giant fish swimming with a whole shark gradually engulfed in its mouth.
Normally, sharks inhabiting the deep sea beds hardly appear in groups, which is why this spectacle is a notable rarity, NOAA explained.
