There have been many challenges online, some generally go viral, and although some are quite controversial, this is not always the case, like the one you’re about to hear… or not.

Trying to listen to the low frequency sounds emitted by speakers is something that apparently is not possible for adults. And although it seems strange, everything has an explanation.

Precisely, as we age, we begin to lose some of the abilities we had when we were young, for example, hearing.

In this way, those who are already adults should not be able to hear what is known as a “mosquito sound”, or a 17.4 kHz tone. To test if this was valid, social media user metzie72 decided to broadcast a sound on her social media account and asked people whether or not they could hear the noise.

And just like that, in shorter time than what it took her to record the video, the post went viral, with hundreds of kids playing the sound with the closest adult they could find. In many of the videos, you can see teenagers, or children, with their parents and while they young ones do seem to hear the intense beep, their elders do not hear a thing.

Although, the theory seems to have some flaws, since many have been able to hear the noise despite being over 25 years old, while some minors were just as well, unable to hear anything. Either way, the majority of people under the age of 20, will be able to hear it quite clearly.

On the other hand, if you attempt to hear the sound through your speakers, mobile device, or computer, it’s probably not gonna happen, however you will have a higher chance of listening to it with headphones. In fact, if you are over 25 years old and watch the video, it might be impossible for you to hear anything, but with headphones, you will be able to hear a low level beep.
