A dive in the waters south of Cornwall, England, resulted in an unlikely encounter between a biologist and a giant jellyfish.
A spectacular video showing a three-foot-long Rhizostoma pulmo jellyfish has been filmed off the town of Falmouth, England, the Guardian writes.
The cnidarian was spotted by biologist Lizzie Daly and filmmaker Dan Abbott who were making a video for the documentary series Wild Ocean Week.
“I have never seen one so big. […] We had seen a few small jellyfish in a beautiful reef nearby, then this huge, beautiful jellyfish came out of the darkness. I looked at it twice and admired the species which was a meter and a half long, ”Ms. Daly said.
Thousands of extreme creatures cross the Atlantic Ocean each year to the warm coastal waters west of the UK and often end up stranded on beaches in May and June, the daily said.
According to Dr Michele Kiernan from the Plymouth Marine Biological Association, scientists have little information on Rhizostoma pulmo jellyfish, including where they spend the first stages of their lives.
