Four orangutans and five bonobos from the San Diego Zoo in California, became the first animals to receive a vaccine against covid-19, reports National Geographic.
According to Nadine Lamberski, director of wildlife health and conservation at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, it is an experimental vaccine developed exclusively for animals by a veterinary pharmaceutical company.
The director expressed that a situation similar to this is not normal. They have never had access to a vaccine so quickly and early, but are excited about testing it.
The apes have not shown adverse reactions and are doing well, according to Lamberski, who explained that they will soon have a blood test to assess if the vaccine is actually working.
