The humpback surges into a school of anchovies. As fish scatter, a sea lion darts across the giant’s back, chasing one that got away. A camera attached to the whale puts us right in the middle of the hunt.

The footage accompanies a new study published October 15 in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. Researchers examined recordings and movement data from 46 whale-mounted tags deployed in Monterey Bay between 2014 and 2023. Across 1,808 feeding lunges, humpbacks feeding alongside California sea lions had a 23% higher feeding rate and 16% shorter gaps between lunges.

That gives the chaotic footage an interesting possibility: the smaller hunters may help make dinner easier to catch. Sea lions could concentrate anchovies into tighter groups, while the whales’ huge mouthfuls leave individual fish separated from the school. Those stragglers become targets for the sea lions.

Watch the split-screen research clip closely after the whale’s lunge. A sea lion rushes through the turbulent water along its back, then passes across the camera’s view. The two perspectives make it possible to follow an encounter that would be almost invisible from a boat.

The researchers did not establish that the animals deliberately cooperate. Both species could simply be converging on the same food. But the whale data showed no detectable increase in per-lunge locomotor cost when sea lions were present, suggesting the faster feeding did not require more work for each gulp.

It is a feeding frenzy with a useful twist: the enormous mouthful and the much smaller chase may benefit both hunters.
