The Queen’s Gambit is a very gripping mini-series, which many of people have certainly watched. Many fans had long given up on the idea of one day being able to watch a second season, but that possibility has recently gained momentum, thanks to comments made by Anya Taylor-Joy, the actress who plays Beth on the small screen.

In the series, we observe the story of Elizabeth Harmon unfold, an orphan, who quickly meets the world of chess thanks to Mister Shaibel, the gruff janitor of the orphanage in which she is placed. Elizabeth, known as “Beth”, quickly takes a passion for the game, and reveals to have a real gift as a competitor. To overcome loneliness, Beth practices and increases her mastery of chess. A strong mini-series that has conquered a relatively large audience.

For Anya Taylor-Joy, portraying Beth Harmon onscreen was perfectly natural, she explained in an interview with Deadline:

“With Beth, it was instincts on a whole other level, I never had to reach for anything. They just had to yell ‘action’ and something would happen.”

It must be said that the acting of Anya Taylor-Joy was praised in a general way by the critics as well as by the viewers. All in all, the miniseries available on Netflix drew 62 million watches from around the world in its first 28 days of airing, making it the most watched miniseries on the platform. With this success, many obviously wondered if a season 2 was planned. Netflix, at first, shut down everyone’s speculation and dream, stating that a second season would never see the light of day.

Netflix

The series creator Scott Frank declared that a second season would not come to fruition, as the series has stuck to the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis.

However this is what Anya had to say about the subject:

“It’s so surreal and very wonderful that people want a second season, because we never thought about it, there was no discussion about it. That said, never say ‘never’ in Hollywood.”

Netflix

This first part of the answer is intriguing, given that Netflix and the producers of the series have been particularly clear on the subject. The actress was therefore invited to say more on the subject, specifically on her hopes for the evolution of her character, in case a second season were to happen. Anya Taylor-Joy had, it seems, beforehand thought about the question, since she replied:

“It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother, now that she’s sober and more cognizant of the demons that pull her down.”

This would indeed be a notable development in the life of Beth Harmon. For her part, on a personal level, the actress says she is more and more fascinated by the career she has pursued, and is particularly enthusiastic about pushing her limits. In other words, Anya Taylor-Joy is eager to face new challenges in order to test her acting skills. She would therefore be quite ready to take up the challenge that the second season of The Queen’s Gambit would constitute, but her longings must still be regarded, both by Netflix, and by the producers of the series.
