‘The Goonies’ will reportedly be the next classic to have a remake, and it looks like it already has a director ready to bring the project new project to life.

Even though the ‘The New Mutants’ did not achieve the success we all hoped for, its director Josh Boone, apparently, is being considered to direct the remake. At the moment there are no details about the cast, plot or scriptwriters. What does seem clear is that the long-awaited new movie about the 1985 classic will be a remake and not a sequel.

‘The Goonies’ was directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg. The cast included Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, and Josh Brolin among others, long before they were household names. The film grossed $124 million on a budget of 19 million and has become a cult classic ever since, amassing fans around the world year after year.

The story revolves around a group of misfits who live in the town of Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon. The children try to save their homes and venture to search for the treasure of a 17th-century pirate, an adventure that makes them flee from dangerous criminals on a journey with unimaginable traps. Given all the amount of remakes and reboots that are now being made or about to be made in Hollywood right now, it makes sense that the story of ‘The Goonies’ is next on the list.

Amblin Entertainment

For its part, the story of ‘The New Mutants’, has some aspects in common with the 1985 film. The spin-off of the X-Men with horror overtones is about a group of teenagers with issues that make it impossible for them to live amongst society, not to mention their powers. The group joins forces in a spooky place full of unknown dangers and work together to overcome a threat. While the Astoria lads had no powers, there are enough similarities in the story to see why Boone would be a good fit for the project. At this time it is unclear if he has already been formally contacted or if his name is just one that is being discussed behind closed doors.

The new version of The Goonies is obviously only in the early stages of development currently, but it will certainly be a project that is going to generate a lot of excitement.
