Years ago, DC Comics had a comic series that was called Elseworlds, created specifically to release stories starring its most popular superheroes but outside of any official continuity and placed in alternate scenarios Simply put, they were the “What would happen if… “ comics.

One of those stories was Superman: Red Son, whose film adaptation has been confirmed by Warner Bros.

Superman: Red Son is a three comic miniseries originally published in 2003 and written by Mark Millar (cocreator of Kick-Ass and Kingsman), centered on a Superman who fell not in the United States, but in the Ukraine, in full swing of the Union Soviet and the Cold War, and whose events take place between 1953 to 2001.

It’s a story that mixes alternate versions of DC Comics superheroes with alternate versions of real personalities from politics, such as Iósif Stalin and John F. Kennedy.

In it, Superman does not fight for the truth and justice of the “American Way,” but for the interests of the Eastern Bloc. He is described as the champion of the common worker, one who fights tirelessly for Stalin, for socialism, and for the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact.

At the time of its publication, Superman: Red Son received praise from the comic book fans and specialized critics, it was nominated for the Eisner Award for best limited series.

The announcement of its adaptation to animated film was within the framework of Comic-Con 2019, where it was also confirmed that it will arrive in 2020 and that it will be the first film from the DC Universe of that year.

Superman: Red Son will feature the voices of Amy Acker, Anna Vocino, Diedrich Bader, Greg Chun, Jim Ward, Jason Isaacs, Jason Spisak, Jim Meskimen, Paul Williams, Phil Lamarr, Phil Morris, Roger Craig Smith, Sasha Roiz, Tara Strong, Travis Willingham, Vanessa Marshall, William Salyers and Winter Zoli.
