A study on horror movies yielded interesting results about the scariest movies of all time. According to the data, the scariest film is a highly criticized movie followed by a list of others well known.
The study, conducted by the comparative site Broadbandchoices, was carried out to determine which is the best of the best horror movie. It turns out that Sinister, which has a very low 62% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is the one that scared the participants in the study the most.
“Is there anything better than a night in with the lights off and a truly terrifying movie that gets your heart pounding?” the website says. “But of the hundreds of horror flicks, which is the ultimate ‘king of fright night’? Our scientific study tracked heart rates throughout some of the world’s most iconic horror films, to study the science of scary, and find the undisputed scariest horror film of all time!”
The films to be screened were chosen through reviews and recommendations on Reddit. Once the list was narrowed down to 50, these were screened to 50 people in a room with surround sound: the volunteers underwent 120 hours of horror movies in which their heart rate was constantly monitored.
And why did Sinister turn out to be the scariest of all? Because that movie was the one which induced on viewers the most beats per minute. If the average at rest is around 56 beats per minute, with Sinister they projected 86: 32% more. The biggest jump scare in the movie attained an average of 131 beats per minute.
The site also shared the top 20 other horror movies that were screened in the experiment and caused the most beats per minute:
