Robert De Niro finalizes the details necessary to join the cast of the project based on the character known as ‘Joker’, the great enemy of Batman, which will be played by Joaquin Phoenix in a film focused on the origins of the character, which was reported on Monday (July 23, 2018) by The Hollywood Reporter.

This is De Niro’s first comic book movie, he will play the host of a successful television program that plays a fundamental role in the conversion of the protagonist turning into a criminal figure. Variety magazine adds that the script of the film has similarities with that of ‘The King of Comedy’ (1982), directed by Martin Scorsese and starring De Niro. In that film, an unsuccessful comedian decides to kidnap a well-known television host for fame and recognition. The film will be directed by Todd Phillips, producer of the trilogy ‘The Hangover’. The script is by Scott Silver and Philips. It will tell the origins of the joker and the events that led him to become that deadly criminal.

The story will unfold in Gotham City during the 1980s and will bet on a more dramatic tone than that of the usual comic-based films. The project, whose filming will begin in September in New York, is part of a new series from DC Comics films with a different angle to the universe that has been developing just like the movie “Suicide Squad”, where Jared Leto played the joker. Leto is expected to resume the character in the sequel to ‘Suicide Squad’ directed by Gavin O Connor.
