It’s not every day you come face to face with a great white shark, in the Australian state of New South Wales, a giant white shark moved towards Matthew Smith, a young man who was fishing in a small kayak a mile offshore at Black Head Beach, 9News reported Monday.

Part of the confrontation was filmed by his friend, Nick O’Brien, who from the beach operated a drone with which he filmed the harrowing scene. The video shows a thirteen-foot shark swimming around the small vessel.

The shark seemed especially attracted to the kayak’s anchor, realizing, Smith decided to throw it overboard so that the predator would lose interest in it. Fortunately, the strategy worked and the animal ended up losing interest, thus, swimming away.

Shark attacks have increased recently in Australia. In this year alone, they have recorded 21 attacks and seven deaths, a new record that had not been broken in 86 years.
