At least two were harnessed, perhaps in preparation to escape the lethal volcanic eruption that destroyed the ancient Roman town in A.D. 79. Archaeologists created a complete cast of one of the horses by injecting plaster into the void in the hardened ash layer where the animal had collapsed. Voids left by the two other horses were damaged by tomb robbers.
