Star Wars fans received a huge surprise during the week when Lucasfilm announced that Gina Carano, who played the mercenary Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, was fired by the studio after a series of unwelcomed comments posted by her on social media. Now, the actress herself talked about the dismissal, taking the opportunity to announce her new project.
In a statement given to the Deadline website, Gina Carano addressed her detractors directly, promising to refer to the cancellation culture in her newest work, a film made in conjunction with conservative website The Daily Wire. The actress said:
“The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”
Carano will develop, produce and star in the feature film, which does not yet have a title or release date. The The Daily Wire has confirmed that it will be released exclusively to subscribers. The production is by Dallas Sonnier (Bone Tomahawk).
For several months, Carano has been challenging anti-conservative netziens on social media, using Twitter and Instagram to voice her opinion.
This week, the actress published a story on Instagram, where she compared Republican to Holocaust prisoners. Despite having deleted the publication, fans of the series started a movement on Twitter, #FireGinaCarano, which in just a few hours, became one of the most talked-about subjects on the internet.
