Most Game Of Thrones fans did not like the ending that was given to the series and although the show is considered one of the best HBO has to offer, its conclusion will always be its worst mistake. Fans have not been able to get past this, however, we are now finding out that the initial proposal offered a very different ending since it was meant to conclude in three parts.

In an interview with a German news channel, George R.R. Martin has rekindled the controversy around the end of the series, he has revealed that the original plans for the end of the show changed considerably. In fact, the final season was going to take place on the big screen.

“At this point in time, it wouldn’t be for me to decide, because HBO controls the film rights for ‘Game of Thrones.’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the two creators behind the series, actually wanted to end the saga after the seventh season with three big movies,” the writer revealed.

Some time ago it was revealed that Martin and the showrunner of the series, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, were analyzing the idea of bringing the end of the series to movie theaters, which would have been a great idea, but events unfolded out of place over the years. The idea was rejected by HBO and instead we obtained the controversial finale that has managed to polarize the audience.

In an interview with Welt, Martin revealed the real reason why the end did not reach the theaters. “Because HBO didn’t want that. The executives said: We produce TV shows, we are not in the cinema business. And if HBO does make a movie, like the movie based on Deadwood, they only produce it to show it on tv – not on the big screen. Everything is changing at the moment. What is being shown at the cinema right now? Everything is mixing up. Nowadays we don’t know where the lines between cinema, streaming services and television are.” he said.

Like the fans, Martin has not hesitated to express his anguish for the outcome that was given to the series, since he has previously expressed that it took extra seasons to give a worthy closure to the story. However, not all hope is lost since the writer revealed to the German channel that, “people know an ending, but not THE ending”, which gives fans hope that the novel will have a different or possibly better ending to the series.
