Scientists have claimed that this is the first recorded case of this kind in the world.
A health worker from the US state of Florida, who had the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine during pregnancy, gave birth to a baby who amassed antibodies for Covid-19 at inception.
The woman, originally from Palm Beach County, received the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine when she was 36 weeks pregnant. Three weeks later, at the end of January, she gave birth to a baby girl, who was subsequently given blood tests.
“We tested the baby’s cord to see if the antibodies in the mother passed to the baby which is something, we see happen with other vaccines given during pregnancy,” pediatrician Paul Gilbert told WPBF
It was later revealed that the newborn had developed antibodies to Covid-19:
“To our knowledge, this was the first in the world that was reported of a baby being born with antibodies after a vaccination,” Golbert explained.
In February, scientists released an article based on the data collected, and its preliminary version was posted on the medRxiv website, although experts have yet to verify their conclusions.
However, the authors pointed out that the woman, who had not previously contracted the coronavirus, gave birth to a completely “healthy” baby girl.
