A resident of the Shetland Islands in Scotland came face to face with a huge basking shark, when he jumped from his boat and dove into the sea. The video shared on YouTube left thousands of users amazed.

Ryan Leith, the author of the recording, had spent several days scouring the archipelago in search of these specimens. When he was about to give up on his search, he found two of these fish and one of them passed within inches of his location.

The man had poor visibility due to the abundant plankton in the area, therefore he did not notice the presence of the cetaceans until they were very close.

“The shark seemed to be interested in the boat and swam towards it almost immediately… It was quite exciting,” Leith told the Mirror newspaper.

The basking shark can reach 40 feet in length and is considered the second largest fish in the world after the whale shark. Their name comes from the fact that they are occasionally seen on the surface, since they usually descend to more than 3,000 feet deep to feed.
