The beautiful and large eyes of Mehlani are praised daily by people; However, her mother preferred that they not be so, given that they are the product of a syndrome that afflicts her and could leave her without vision.
For Karina, Mehlani’s mother, it is difficult to respond to the praise for her daughter’s large eyes which are due to a rare genetic condition.

The condition is known as Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome; This disease affects the development of the eyes and causes glaucoma.
Karina reported that her daughter was diagnosed this week, the genetic disorder damages the cornea and iris, while glaucoma attacks the optic nerves of the eye and could cause blindness due to pressure.
Karina is concerned about what her two year old go through for being “different.” Malahni uses sunglasses when she is out in the open to protect her eyes.
Everytime were out & a stranger compliments on how big & beautiful her eyes are, I have a mental debate on whether or not I should mention her defect. I decide no, smile & say thank you. Her mom expressed her fears on social networks and received words of encouragement in return.
“It looks like a cute child syndrome for me, making a great mom!”
“She is perfect and if she ever doubts it when she is older, just remind her that everyone has something that makes them unique and different from others,” added another person.
