The daily life of wild animals is full of danger, as they never know where a predator may lurk. And this holds true even for the world’s fastest lamd animals, who cannot let their guard down even while acquiring their basic needs.

In light of this, a cheetah cub that went to a pond to quench its thirst was eaten by a crocodile in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. A video documented the dramatic scene was posted on December 3 on YouTube by WildEarth, a channel dedicated to filming animals in their natural environment.

In the recording, the cheetah, the fastest land animal, capable of easily exceeding 60 miles per hour – is seen drinking from the pond while cautiously looking towards the water. After noticing the predator coming towards it, the cheetah, probably desperately thirsty, underestimates the distance between the two, and suddenly the crocodile comes out of the water and drags the feline below in less than ten seconds. Thus demonstrating, that the crucial advantage is not always speed: in this case, it resided in the power of the reptile’s jaws and in its ability to orchestrate a perfect ambush.
