Since her appearance in the first episode of WandaVision, Agnes, the nosy neighbor of the Maximoff family, made it clear that she was hiding numerous secrets. And now that the end is near, the Marvel Studios series has confirmed the true identity of Westview’s most disturbing citizen, who has actually been pulling the strings all this time.
In the 7th episode, while Wanda looks for the twins, Billy and Tommy at Agnes’s house, whom she entrusted to babysit while she spent some time alone to recoup from the crisis derived on Halloween night after Vision decided to leave home, she discovers in the basement, the witches sanctuary of her gossipy neighbor, played by the great Kathryn Hahn.
It is a dark cave, a lair full of enchantment books, grim skulls and magic potions that reveal, as rumors pointed out, Agnes is actually the powerful sorceress Agatha Harkness.
That’s when, by way of breaking the fourth wall, it is revealed how the vile witch has been manipulating everything happening to the couple, from the citizens to Pietro himself, so that the events of the sitcom transpire according to her malevolent plan.

In the comics, Agatha Harkness’s story is long and convoluted. Created by none other than the legendary Stan Lee and Jack Dirby, Agatha’s first appearance dates back to 1970 in Fantastic Four Issue 94 and was introduced as one of the original witches of the Salem Witch Trials. After babysitting Franklin Benjamin Richards, the son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, she becomes Wanda’s mentor, helping her understand and control her magical powers developed from the mutant gene.
However, they have not always been friends or allies. At this point, it should be noted that the series seems to follow much of the plot from the Dynasty of M, the legendary Marvel comic where Mephisto, the Devil, is the great villain, and in that story Agatha Harkness is also present and is a key character.
In the plot of House of M, this sorceress is in charge of erasing from Wanda’s memory, the loss of her two children, after they are taken from her by Mephisto. Something that Wanda will never forgive. Thus, ultimately, in the comic Agatha Harkness is killed by the Scarlet Witch.
But in WandaVision, Agatha’s plan seems much more malicious and she may even be acting on her own, after all, she is the great villain, as the song at the end of the episode indicates.
Whether Agatha is working for Mephisto, the other rumored great villain, or acting of her own free will, she accomplished bringing the twins to life. In them may be the key to fixing what is happening, and with Pietro controlled by the witch, the consequences for Wanda and Vision can be disastrous.
