This specimen, native to the rainforests of South and Central America, reaches two meters in wingspan with its wings fully open.

There are many internet users who were surprised to see the photograph of this huge bird, and more than one believed that it was a digitally retouched image, some, that a person was disguised as the animal; however, thousands were stunned to discover that the creature in question exists and is called the harpy eagle.

It is known for being one of the largest birds in the world. It can reach 6.5 feet in wingspan and weighs between four to 20 pounds (the female doubles the weight of the male). Its claws are enormous, they can expand more than 5 inches and be larger than the human hand.

Its natural habitat is the rain forest and it tends to abound in the southeast of Mexico, some Central American countries, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and the north of Argentina. The harpy eagle is characterized by maintaining a carnivorous diet and can carry up to 70% of its own body weight. Animals such as monkeys, coatis, and sloths are their main prey.

Although they can live between 25 and 35 years (some reach 40), these birds are in danger of extinction because, according to experts, they are repeatedly hunted by poachers who pursue their feathers, despite the fact that they are a protected species.
