Video games have been the subject of much controversy over the years. Some studies link them to excess violence, even crimes, while others exonerate them. Faced with the rise of carjacking in his state, a member of the United States House of Representatives decided to propose a law aimed at stopping the sale of violent video games, such as GTA.
Confronted with the resurgence of carjacking cases in the city of Chicago and its surroundings, Marcus Evans Jr., member of the United States House of Representatives, decided to change the law allowing the sale of violent video games to adults. To do this, the Official wishes to pass an amendment from the 2012 law which prohibited the sale of violent games to minors, except the word “minors” is replaced with “all”, thus, no one would be able to buy violent games legally, anymore:
“The bill would prohibit the sale of some of these games that promote the activities that we’re suffering from in our communities. I feel like this game has become a huge issue in this spectrum. When you compare the two, you see harsh similarities as it relates to these carjackings,” Evans said.
He also attested that violent video games are the cause of this increase in crime. The bill would also aim to change the definition of a “violent video game,” to “control a character within the video game that is encouraged to perpetuate human-on-human violence in which the player kills or otherwise causes serious physical or psychological harm to another human or an animal. ” .
According to the police of the city of Chicago, 218 carjackings were identified in January. Nevertheless, it seems crazy to imagine that video games could be at the origin of this increase. In addition, the new definition would ban the sale of many games like the Grand Theft Auto series from Rockstar or even from the world of sports, hunting, and fighting.
