The main cast from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has signed an open letter, requesting that film director James Gunn be re-hired for the third installment.

“We express our absolute support for James Gunn, ” says the letter published on Monday on Instagram and signed by Vin Diesel , Dave Bautista and Chris Pratt, among others, clarifying that they are not defending the “jokes of many years ago” made by the filmmaker .

On July 20 the Disney production company fired Gunn for some old tweets in which he mocked pedophilia and rape. After his dismissal, the filmmaker apologized and said that what was expressed almost a decade ago were unsuccessful and unfortunate efforts to be provocative.

The cast of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ also trusts that the director’s apologies ” are from the heart “.  “There is little due process in the court of public opinion, James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in the country, its safe to say instances like this will continue,” the letter adds.
