Sony Pictures continues with firm steps expanding its Spiderverse. After the Venom film, who’s sequel is being filmed as we speak, the imminent Morbius and some other projects are in development as well, such as Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, now the studio is also developing a Spider-Woman film that could star Alicia Vikander. This film is scheduled to be directed by Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones).
Therefore, Jessica Drew will have her own Sony film, as Daniel Richtman revealed through a tweet. The Illuminerdi suggests that the studio is interested in MacLaren, known for directing several episodes of Game of Thrones, Beter Call Saul and The X Files. Sony is also eying Alicia Vikander ( Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, Tomb Raider) to give life to Spider-Woman.
In the Marvel comics, Jessica Drew, daughter of scientist Jonathan Drew, sustains a radiation poisoning incident and, to save her, her father administers a mysterious arachnid serum. This medicine contains a genetic accelerator that suddenly turns Drew into an adult and gives her a whole series of arachnid powers.
Throughout her different appearances, both on and off the screen, Drew has been a villain alongside the evil HYDRA group, but also a hero, fighting alongside the Avengers. We will have to wait and find out what kind of plot Sony will have in store for the movie, and whether or not there will be connections to the rest of the company’s Spiderverse movies.
Although at the moment nothing is confirmed yet, this film could be precisely what Sony needs to maintain its Spiderverse momentum. If everything goes as planned, Spider-Woman could reach theaters by July 31, 2021.
