Shortly after filming began, the live-action of Mulan adds a new character to be on the side of the villainous witch that will be played by Gong Li. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Scott Lee joins the cast to portray Bori Khan, a warrior leader who seeks revenge for the death of his father.
This would not be the first time that Scott Lee works with the mouse company, because in 1994 he played Mowgli in The Jungle Book. And he also lent his voice to interject as David Kawena – Nani’s admirer in Lilo & Stitch. However, the actor is best remembered for playing Bruce Lee in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story in 1993.
This change in the villains might come as a surprise, since the plot of this movie will be completely different from the original animated film. Shan Yu arrives in China to invade the country with his army, something that Mulan stops at all costs. However, the character of Gong Li, who is still unnamed, is a sorceress, this implies that we will surely see the heroine fight against something more than just fists and swords.
So far the cast includes Lui Yifei as Mulan; Yoson An, who will play Chen Honghui, Mulan’s new romantic interest; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, the mentor of the heroine; Jet Li will be the Emperor; Utkarsh Ambudkar will play Skatch, a swindler; Ron Yuan will be Qiang, a loyal sergeant; Xana Tang as the sister of Mulan and Chum Ehelepola who will play Ramtish.
The only characters that actually come from the animated version are Mulan and the Emperor, the other characters will be completely new. We have great hope for this film because of the major plot changes. Remaking this film exactly the same as the animated would be a complete bore.
