Penny Dreadful will soon return to the small screen, with its spin-off City of Angels, unveiled its first images a month ago. Natalie Dormer (ex-Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones) as Eva Green, was announced as the headliner for this new series expected on Showtime on April 26.
In a new teaser, we see the actress in the role of Magda, a demon who can take the appearance of anyone and will assume identities. She will be as much a powerful enemy as an indispensable ally.
City of Angels will have no connection with the original series since it will no longer take place in the Victorian England era. The stage is set in Los Angeles, 1938 and will evoke the roots of Mexican folklore, the rise of evangelism on the radio along with the acts of espionage of the Third Reich.
“There is a prophecy. A time will come when the nation defeats the nation, when race will devour race and not a single soul will remain.” These are the dire words, spoken by Santa Muerte, that can be heard at the start of the new teaser. The series will begin with a sordid murder which will lead Tiago Vega detective (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) to conduct an investigation in the City of Angels which is plagued by supernatural and horrific events.
And while the show takes place in 1938, its creator John Logan recalls that the intrigue is similar to what is happening in the world now in 2020 with the rise of extremist movements, racism and the marginalization of certain minorities.
