Matilda , the popular 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and which launched Mara Wilson to fame, will have a new version, now under the Netflix label and in musical format.
This remake, like the original movie, is based on Roald Dahl’s classic about a brilliant five-year-old girl who develops mental powers to confront all those who are mean to her, which include her relatives, and the principal of the school. She also uses her abilities to protect her friends.
The site, The Hollywood Reporter announced that this new version is directed by Matthew Warchus, who also was in charge of the musical Matilda, which turned out to be a hit both on Broadway and in London’s West End. In fact, in 2012 it won seven Olivier Awards as well as five Tonys in 2013.
The release date of the remake is still unknown. The most important role has not been announced, who will play Matilda? Her friends or her family members, have not yet been casted either. However it has already been confirmed that Lashana Lynch will play Honey, Matilda’s adorable teacher who encourages her to believe in herself and to make good use of her powers.
We already saw Lynch as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel alongside Brie Larson. She will also appear in the new James Bond film, No Time to Die, which will be released in April, after being postponed for several months due to the pandemic.
And if you are wondering who will personify the evil principle Trunchbull, this news will shock you, because according to Daily Mail, it will be the British actor Ralph Fiennes, Lord Voldemort himself will now embody this character.
By the same token, the announcement has not surprised fans, as it was also a man who played the character in the Broadway and West End musical.
According to the Deadline site, Netflix is already working on the adaptation of other Roald Dahl classics, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG.
