In the govenor elections for the prefecture of Chiba, Japan, a candidate, Yuusuke Kawai, dressed as Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the Joker to a campaign.

As reported in Kotaku, Kawai is an entrepreneur who quit his job to enter Japan’s entertainment industry as a comedian. However, since he was not making it on television, he turned his attention to making YouTube videos.


Regarding his appearance, the candidate explained in an interview with a Japanese media that “since the clown is a dark hero, he had the impression that he could have the support of the masses.”

Thus, the candidate appeared characterized the Clown Prince of Crime on television giving a campaign speech. At his presentation, the Kawai continued with his performance and made a series of crazy promises related to Disney that include:

  • Rename Narita Airport to Disney Sky
  • Designate the song Let It Go, from the movie Frozen, as the official Chiba song
  • Ban the word “garbage” and replace it with ” star shards
  • Referring to populist politicians as “Olaf,” the snowman from Frozen

According to Kotaku, it is a normal occurrence for candidates in Japan to campaign for sheer entertainment. In that sense, the politician had warned Tokyo Sports that he aimed to go for laughter, so perhaps his speech and his appearance should not be taken at face value. Or maybe he is serious, after all, tgaga how the Joker manipulates.
