Finally some good news in 2020. At least for fans of one of the most successful sagas in fantasy literature. Recently, the property of JRR Tolkien has authorized the publication of a book that will include unpublished material which the author wrote pertaining to the The Lord of the Rings universe.
Since the novels of The Lord of the Rings made their appearance in the middle of the last century, they have become objects of treasure; in addition to considerably influencing the development of such a prolific genre in fantasy literature, film, and television. These works were later adapted into an Oscar-winning film series, directed by Peter Jackson, which will now receive a television adaptation under the Amazon umbrella.
Tolkien referred to the original trilogy as “heroic romance,” and it takes place in Middle Earth, a universe populated by elves, hobbits, sorcerers and orcs that, in theory, served as a reinterpretation of planet Earth thousands of years ago. In this universe, humans co-exist with these fantastic species, yet not always at peace.
Middle-earth has not been free of troubles faced by the real or fictional universes; it has withstood wars, poverty, destruction and famine. The starting point of the original trilogy transpires when Frodo, a seemingly ordinary hobbit, has been assigned the task of destroying the most powerful ring of all. From there, the books follow Frodo’s journey to Mordor, as he navigates a series of dangers along the way.
Despite the length of the novels, they only address a short period of Middle Earth and Tolkien, contextualized this universe with maps and guides to explain the history of this fantastic land.
Tolkien’s new stories, which are called The Nature of Middle – Earth, will be a collection of essays, edited by Carl F. Hofstetter, an expert on Tolkien’s work, who also leads an organization charged with studying the languages that Tolkien created for his books. The essay compendium will be available next June and has been edited in conjunction with Tolkien’s son.
