A retiree from Florida showed tremendous courage and rushed into the waters of a small pond to pull out the alligator that had just grabbed his dog. After a few seconds of wrestling against the jaws of the reptile, the man managed to free his faithful companion.

This dramatic footage was recently captured by a surveillance camera in the city of Fort Myers, Florida. The 74-year-old retiree struggled with the jaws of an alligator to save his puppy.

According to this Florida man, it was the adrenaline or instinct that made him throw himself recklessly into the pond located in his backyard.

As the video reveals, the alligator was not awfully big, but, large enough to pull the dog into the pond. The man quickly pulled the reptile out of the water, but getting its jaws to open up was “extremely difficult.” Mr Wilbanks said his hands had been ‘chewed’ which prompted him to go to the see a doctor for a tetanus shot.

Saved from imminent death, the King Charles spaniel, named Gunner, had a stomach injury and is doing better after a visit to the veterinary.

As for the alligator, Mr Wilbanks doesn’t want the reptile removed from the pond or killed. “They are part of nature and our lives,” he said. However, the man is now on his guard and keeps his puppy on a leash so that it does not wander off close to the pond.
