Fans love to pose “what if” circumstances amongst their fandoms, imagining crossover scenarios between different characters or weapons between them, one of which is whether a lightsaber would be deadly force against Superman or if it would even faze the Last Son Of Krypton.
A lightsaber is one of the most powerful weapons in Star Wars, but Superman is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe. Who would win?
The lightsaber is the traditional weapon and sword of Force users in Star Wars, regardless of whether they are Jedi or Sith, the weapons are contained plasma blades emitted from a hilt, powered by a kyber crystal, and can be activated and deactivated by the user.
Due to its ability to cut and melt many items, fans have theorized that a lightsaber possibly operates at temperatures of up to 25,000 degrees Celsius.
While this is impressive, it does not compare to the Man of Steel from the DC Universe. Being a Kryptonian, Superman is nearly invulnerable thanks to solar radiation and the energy he receives from Earth’s yellow sun, which is constantly absorbed by his cells.
Because the Sun itself heats up to 15 million degrees Celsius at its core, this effectively confirms that harming Superman with a normal lightsaber would be ineffective and just wouldn’t work.
Kyber crystals are force-sensitive crystals traditionally retrieved on Jedi worlds such as Illum, powering a Jedi’s lightsaber while simultaneously providing blade color.
A lightsaber wouldn’t hurt Superman unless a shard of kryptonite was used to power it, which could then do great damage to the protector of Metropolis. Nonetheless, eventually, Superman’s vulnerability to kryptonite fades away due to his prolonged exposure to the yellow sun as mentioned in the Kingdom Come comic.
However, Superman is known to be susceptible to magic, and lightsabers are powered through the Force by the living crystals that reside within them, as some fans have argued that the Force could be a type of magic, then perhaps a saber could actually have a stunning effect on Superman.
