The reboot of ‘Animaniacs’ has already premiered through Hulu and they have quickly given something to talk about, since in its first episode there is a reference to Johnny Depp that was not well received by the actor’s followers.
In recent weeks Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been the center of many conversations, given the jury’s ruling against the actor after he lost the legal lawsuit against The Sun for defamation, prompting Warner Bros. to request the resignation of the interpreter from the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Now the reboot of Animaniacs seems to have added fuel to the fire because they made a joke about Depp.
On November 20, the episodes that make up season 1 premiered on Hulu; As we are used to, the humor of Yakko, Wakko and Dot is irreverent and they make fun of themselves, starting with a conversation in the first chapter in which they do not know what phrase to open with so as not to disappoint. Later on, a musical number called: “Reboot It” is included, in which they make fun of how various series such as Animaniacs itself and Gilmore Girls, X-Files, among others have suffered some renewal, reboot, remake or otherwise, appealing to the current trend.
However, also in this episode, a poster of Johnny Depp appears in a fictional film whose title is: “Johnny 2: Telling Lies”, something that for many, is a reference to the trial that concluded a few weeks ago and of which the actor did not receive a fair outcome. This incident has led several fans to express their resentment on social networks and to revive the boycott campaign against Warner Bros., pointing out that the studio did not support Johnny during the legal process and that later, pushed him to resign from Fantastic Beasts 3, not to mention that the existing joke could theoretically have been avoided.
And since the Animaniacs are still a part of Warner Bros. Animation, the studio was involved in the process of creating the episodes, in theory, they seem to have purposely sent a message to Johnny Depp.
It should be noted that it could also be that the joke about the actor is not about the current events, since obviously the episode was made long before the premiere, so perhaps at that time, they had no idea what ruling the case would yield, although it is true that for a long time now, the interpreter has generated conflicting opinions given the accusations from Amber Heard, especially after disclosing audio, proving his ex-wife was physically and mentally abusing him.
