Riverdale’s zombie apocalypse has found the filmmaker who will introduce it to television. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is set to direct the pilot and second episode of Afterlife with Archie for Disney+, according to October 19 reports from Dread Central and The Disney Scoop, both citing Deadline. The latter reports that he will also executive produce those two episodes.

That gives the adaptation of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla’s horror comic a director with experience on both sides of its premise: teenagers dealing with overwhelming emotions, and people dealing with things that absolutely should have stayed dead.

The disaster begins with a dog

The comic’s starting point is painfully small for a story that threatens an entire town. In Archie Comics’ own description, Jughead asks Sabrina the Teenage Witch to bring back his beloved dog, Hot Dog, after a hit-and-run. Her forbidden magic restores him, but something terrible returns with him. The danger spreads, forcing Archie and his friends to flee Riverdale.

That is the hook worth protecting in an adaptation. The catastrophe starts with grief and an understandable wish, then turns the people and places that should offer comfort into threats. Familiarity supplies the sting: surviving a stranger is one problem; surviving someone you love is another.

The reported television premise preserves the broad idea of a witch’s spell unleashing the undead and putting the gang’s friendships and loyalties under pressure. How closely individual scenes will follow the comic remains to be seen.

A director with horror and heartbreak on his résumé

Gomez-Rejon directed The Town That Dreaded Sundown and episodes of American Horror Story, as Dread Central notes. His credits also include Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Hunters. Those are useful reference points for this assignment, though they cannot tell us what the finished show will look like.

Directing the first two episodes gives him an opportunity to establish the transition from recognizable small-town life to full survival horror. For this adaptation, the most interesting test will be whether viewers care about the gang before the danger arrives. A zombie is frightening enough. A familiar face becoming one makes the threat personal.

The reported destination is Halloween 2027

The October 19 coverage points to Halloween 2027 as the planned Disney+ premiere window. The Disney Scoop reports that no cast has been announced. Neither a returning Riverdale ensemble nor the finished series’ approach to the comic should be assumed from the director announcement.

Readers can revisit the source material much sooner: Penguin Random House lists an Oni Press deluxe collection of issues #1–10 for October 27, 2026, including a cover gallery and development material. For now, that is the available blueprint for a town whose most dangerous mistake begins with wanting a loved one back.
