One wants to outsmart Superman. The other would like you to stop wasting company time. Lex Luthor and Mr. Krabs live in very different cartoon worlds, but there is a familiar voice behind both: Clancy Brown.

That connection is fun enough on its own. The more interesting part is how an actor famous for intimidating screen characters built a second career that could include both a calculating billionaire and a crab having a meltdown over loose change.

Two bosses, one performer

Brown played Lex Luthor in Superman: The Animated Series and voices Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants. They are separate performances, not evidence of a secret crossover. The imagined studio meeting in our illustration is strictly a fan-art joke.

In a 2023 Fresh Air interview, Brown said he pursued animation partly because recording in Los Angeles let him stay close to his young daughter. Voice director Andrea Romano cast him as Luthor and taught him the different pace of voice work.

Animation demanded quick reading, preparation and an ability to respond to direction. Brown also demonstrated that Mr. Krabs sits higher than his ordinary speaking voice. The same performer does not mean the same sound.

Mr. Krabs is not just a tiny supervillain

Brown’s explanation of the crab is especially good: the character is meant to be the adult, yet often behaves like the most childish person in the room. His fixation on money makes him ridiculous, particularly when he confronts how much he needs SpongeBob.

That is the pleasure of discovering a voice connection. You start by hearing the resemblance. Then you notice the choices that keep the characters apart. Luthor can make a business meeting feel threatening; Mr. Krabs can make counting coins feel like a personal emergency.

Different universes. Very different management styles. One remarkably flexible microphone career.
