A Super Mario movie will be hitting theaters in 2022, Nintendo confirmed. The company also announced that the creator of the franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto, is involved in the project according to GamesRadar.
Super Mario is one of the most iconic symbols in the video game industry and pop culture as a whole. The games follow Mario’s adventures, usually in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom, where he is accompanied by his brother Luigi and other beloved characters in the franchise.
According to Nintendo, Super Mario will be a CGI animated film with the involvement of Miyamoto (who in addition to Mario created Zelda and Donkey Kong ) and Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination (the studio behind the Minions).
This will not be the first adaptation of Super Mario for theaters, which in 1993 won a live action that was very poorly received by the public and critics. Therefore, Meledandri declared to Variety:
“I like that this was not done well the first time. I think that’s more exciting or more worthy than simply making another version of a film that was done incredibly well to begin with. ”
For the time being, no information has been released about the plot or about which characters from the Mario universe will be in the adaptation.
