The popularity of golf is visibly declining, so much so, that the discussion about game rule changes has been resurrected. We would like to further encourage this by advocating golf as a contact sport.

According to historians, golf originated in the Netherlands, a game in which a curved stick and a ball made from feathers was used among the Romans, which may have been the inspiration for this sport. However, according to historical records, the game we know today was invented by the Scots between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

This sport became so popular in Scotland that the Scottish parliament had to enact a law prohibiting this game to prevent people from devoting more time to this activity than to the practice of archery, which represented a military necessity. Of course, people still played the forbidden game.

Golf is now primarily a pastime for the elite, but with a few simple modifications we can turn it into a real sport again. Fun to do, fun to watch.

1. There is only 1 ball, and whoever hits it in the hole wins.

2. You use the golf club to keep other players away from the ball which could lead to a battle, similar to medieval sword fighting.

3. It is no longer about your handicap, but the handicap that you give others.

4. You may bring along cheerleaders and a band to cheer you on before each drive or to distract others on their turn.

5. If your caddy parishes, you have to go back to the first hole.

6. Golf cart racing to each hole.

7. Wrestling a crocodile and wining, removes 10 strokes from your total score.

Let us know if you have any exaggerated rules that can be added on to this list, and we’ll swing it in.
