‘DOOM’ is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential video games in all of history and the one that made popular the concept of First Person Shooter (FPS). However, despite being considered a cult video game, today it is still fighting, trying to be successful in the movie business because it has not had any success. The last attempt was a movie released in 2005 which included Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Now, ‘DOOM’ has a new opportunity to get rid of that bad taste the past movie left us. They are preparing a new film based on the famous franchise that was born in 1993 by the hand of ID Software. The name is ‘DOOM: Annihilation,’ it is coming back in live-action format and we already have the first preview in the form of a small teaser-trailer.
It should be mentioned that ‘DOOM: Annihilation’ will not be a sequel to the 2005 movie, but rather a completely independent film based on the ‘DOOM’ universe. The attractive part, is that Tony Giglio, director of the film, confirmed that in this storyline the creatures do come from hell.
A point to take into account, is that the film is a production of ‘Universal 1440’, Universal’s home theater subsidiary, so it is believed that ‘DOOM: Annihilation’ will go directly to DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital, without making its way to the big screen. This would not be good news for the fans who want to see it at the theater, but we’ll wait for an official confirmation.
Another detail that director Giglio confirmed, is that ‘DOOM: Annihilation’ also seeks to be a tribute to the video game from 1993. This will be accomplished by submerging us from a third person action sequence to first person shots from the marine’s helmet, where we will be able to appreciate the HUD or Heads Up Display interface with greater realism.
‘DOOM: Annihilation’ will be released during the fall on a date that will be announced later.
