Mattel Films closed the deal with Warner Bros. Pictures that will finally result in a live-action film in which actress Margot Robbie will play the iconic doll, a project that seems difficult in a politically correct environment, but that opens the door to other characters owned by this brand.
Robbie’s adventure will not be easy. Barbie is much more than a simple doll because it has represented many things since its creation, some of them positive in some decades and offensive in others. In regards to this Margot Robbie stated the following:
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” Robbie said. “I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
On behalf of Mattel, the executive director Ynon Kreiz also issued what this project represents for one of its most important products:
“This project is a great start to our partnership with Ynon and Mattel Films,” stated Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “And Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”
These statements can mean that not only Barbie will have a live-action movie, the doors to a future He-Man And The Masters of the Universe are opened, of course, we might also get films from Max Steel, Monster High or My Scene, but if Mattel Films wants to make a statement in the film industry, it will be necessary for the movies to have a great storylines.
Robbie will co-produce the movie under her LuckyChap Entertainment company, along with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap Entertainment.
The actress will begin in February the filming “Birds of Prey” from DC, where she will repeat her role as Harley Quinn. She is also known for playing “Donna Freedman,” in the series Neighbors, “Naomi Lapaglia” in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Jane Porter” in “The Legend of Tarzan.”
