In recent months, Slytherin has taken control of the internet with many videos related to Draco Malfoy and now this phenomenon even has its own hashtag – “Dracotok”. And, Tom Felton, the actor who played Draco, made a reaction video that has so far garnered nearly 19 million views.
In the world of Harry Potter, Draco represents a classic antagonist. However, it is much more complicated than that.
He creates a lot of troubles for everyone’s favorite trio, but he is also in plenty of scenes that prove he’s a good guy and the hero of the story. His early education and difficult circumstances only dragged him down.
Here are some moments that prove Draco Malfoy has always been the hero in Harry Potter.
He Pretended Not To Recognize Harry
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, there is a time when Harry is captured at Malfoy Mansion with a spell that has distorted his face. Bellatrix pressured Draco to determine whether the captured boy is Harry.
His eyes show that he recognizes Harry, but decides not to confirm that they have actually captured Potter. Instead, he chooses to save the hero and thus, becomes the hero himself. This is a definite sign that Draco never wanted Harry Potter to really suffer.
Draco’s Destiny
The core of Draco’s wand consists of unicorn hair, and the most celebrated wand maker in the series, Garrick Ollivander, said: “Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.”
Knowing that each magician’s wand chooses its owner for a reason, there is a good argument that JK Rowling never intended Draco Malfoy to be bad. The core of his magic wand, like his spirit, is difficult to turn to the dark arts.
He Wouldn’t Kill Dumbledore
Draco’s attempts to kill Dumbledore were so weak that Dumbledore himself wondered if the person behind them was really trying to kill him. When Draco confronted Dumbledore to fulfill Voldemort’s will and assassinate the director, he took too long.
He even lowered his wand, crying and struggling to cast a spell. In the end, Severus Snape commits the crime, instead of him. Draco did not kill Dumbledore, even with his parents’ life at stake. Draco’s life on the dark arts is miserable and is not in keeping with his real character.
Protects His Family
Throughout the series, Draco is under constant pressure to live up to his surname and heritage. Ironically, Voldemort manipulates the Malfoy family because of Lucious Malfoy’s past mistakes as a Death Eater. Draco tries to save his parents’ lives by agreeing to kill Dumbledore.
Stepping up to do the wrong thing was also a kind of heroism. He was putting his life on the line for his parents, even though he knew he would never be able to kill Dumbledore.
He Helps Harry Save His Son
Despite his complicated past, Draco helps Harry Potter save his relationship with his son, Albus. He advises Harry to forgive and accept Albus, otherwise the two will suffer because of the lost connection. This further illustrates Draco’s goodness and virtuous side.
This shows that Draco reflects on his relationship with his father and tries not to have someone else repeat his mistakes, helping Harry’s relationship with Albus along the way.
