This is a simple yet great selection of films that you may, or may not be familiar with. Great scary movies exist, but how do we know which ones will give us a big fright? The only way to find out is to risk watching them or consider a list of chilling movies chosen by people who have seen plenty of them. Hopefully, you’ll find something here you’ll like to try this Halloween night.
‘The Faculty’ (1998)
Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Robert Rodríguez. It includes a successful youth cast, that draws you into the disasters they get themselves into, 20 years after its premiere.
‘It’ (2017)
A reliable adaptation of the Stephen King classic that has a great cast, a fairly faithful approach and a convincing recreation of the 80s. The horror atmosphere imposed by the fearsome Pennywise. A memorable horror movie that chills you to the bone.
‘The Cabin in the Woods’ (2011)
An excellent film that at the same time parodies and celebrates horror cinema. Full of surprises throughout its footage that fit wonderfully into what was proposed instead of being mere effects, it is a suggestion that is convenient to see knowing as little as possible about it.
‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe’, (2016)
The autopsy of a woman to which she is subjected to determine the cause of death will freak you out. Winner of the Jury Prize at the Sitges Film Festival, it is a film that knows how to keep the audience interested.
‘Halloween 2’, (1981)
A terrific sequel to the John Carpenter classic that takes a more direct approach with Michael Myers wreaking havoc in a hospital. It loses the wow factor and mounting angst of its predecessor, but in return, it is terrifying entertainment that never wanes.
‘Hellraiser’ (1987)
A true eighties classic that introduced the general public to the cenobites and the fearsome Pinhead, although the latter did not receive this name until the sequel. A sadistic and twisted film with very successful special effects for its time.
‘The Visit’, (2015)
An enjoyable film that brought us back to the best Shyamalan has to offer, a story that knows how to make clever use of found footage. Incredibly twisted, very smart and surprising at the same time.
‘A Cure for Wellness’, (2016)
Gore Verbinski gave us a rarity in these times. This hypnotic film takes from the disused horror cinema to build a story with an unhealthy atmosphere that keeps you glued to the screen. It falls in its final stretch, but is still worth it, really, worth it.
‘Insidious’ (2010)
This story in the streak of ‘Poltergeist’ is quite exciting and creates a relatively effective climate of unease. In addition, its leading partner formed by Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson stands out.
‘Near Dark’, (1987)
Vampirism according to Kathryn Bigelow. It was the first solo feature film by the author of great stories such as ‘Detroit’, who here applied a style and most unusual portrait of the myth of vampirism, flirting with action cinema and without fear to give a certain halo of sadness worth watching.
